Twenty-one noted personalities have urged the prime ministers of Bangladesh and India to rethink the Rampal coal-fired power plant project considering its adverse impacts on the world’s largest mangrove forest, The Sunderbans.
In a joint statement on Saturday, they said the two countries share the world heritage The Sunderbans and recently a decision has been taken to build a power plant under a joint initiative of India and Bangladesh at Rampal and the work on the project is progressing, reports Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha.
Foreign experts have already said that when this plant would start power generation, it would discharge several thousand tonnes of harmful gas, ash and coal-washed water that would put The Sunderbans in danger, the statement added.
They said such a development project would create a long term crisis instead of playing role in the development of the two countries.
‘We hope the two prime ministers will announce cancellation of the Rampal power plant and take up programmes for protecting The Sunderbans,’ the statement added.
Signatories to the statement include Sultana Kamal, Abdullah Abu Sayeed, Jamilur Reza Chowdhury, Khushi Kabir, Syed Abul Maksud, Anu Muhammad, Rasheda K Chowdhury, Mujahidul Islam Selim, Quamrul Islam Chowdhury, Mobasser Hosain, Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Badiul Alam Majumder, Ruhin Hosain Prince, Shahjahan, BD Rahmatullah, Farida Akhter, Faridul Islam and Abdul Matin.
