India to resolve water-sharing issue with West Bengal’s help: Modi

Indian prime minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said India would be able to settle the Teesta and Feni rivers’ water-sharing issues with the help of its West Bengal and Tripura states.
‘I’m confident that with the support of State government of India we can reach a fair consensus on Teesta and Feni rivers,’ he said while making his statement after a meeting with his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina at Prime Minister’s Office at Tejgaon in Dhaka, reports United News of Bangaldesh.
‘Our rivers should nurture our relationship, not become a source of discord. Water sharing is, above all, a human issue,’ he added.
Saying that Indian investments in Bangladesh would help bridge the trade gap between the countries, Modi promised that his country would help Bangladesh make trade smoother and easier.
‘People in India admire your nation’s progress despite challenges. We want you to succeed in your Mission 2021 & 2041,’ the visiting Indian prime minister said in his statement to the media this evening.
Stressing the relationship between Bangladesh and India as of ‘great importance for us and our region’, Modi said, ‘We are successful fellow travellers on the road to development.’
‘We are two nations defined by our youth. We owe it to them to set new directions and scale new heights in our relations,’ Modi said.

Indian prime minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina adress a joint press conference after bilateral talks between the two countries at the Prime Minister’s Office at Tejgaon in Dhaka on Saturday.

The prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, on Saturday said a greater connectivity is very vital for the development of the two countries and the region saying that the signing of a slew of deals on that front are examples of two countries commitment to seamless connectivity. ‘We understand each other’s concerns and priorities. Prime minister Modi and I agree that a greater connectivity is vital for the development of the two countries and for the region,’ said Hasina mentioning that connectivity across the region will reduce inequalities maximising welfare gains, reports United News of Bangladesh.
She made the remark in her statement at a joint press statement issued on Saturday mentioning that the new trade facilitation measures incorporated in signed agreements would create new opportunities for more trade, investment and business. ‘We’ve very good cooperation in power and energy sectors.’
The Prime Minister mentioned the signing of the Coastal Shipping Agreement, the renewal of the Trade Agreement and the Protocol on Inland Water Transit and Trade, as well as the flagging off new bus services are examples of their commitment to seamless connectivity across the region.
Describing the moment as truly a historic moment, Hasina said, ‘We’re transforming our relationship to a greater’
On LBA issue, Hasina said with the exchange of the letters of ratification of the 1974 Land Boundary Agreement, a 68-year-old humanitarian issue comes to a peaceful end.
‘We’re extremely happy that the land boundary issue has finally been resolved. I appreciate prime minister Modi’s leadership in achieving it. It has been possible for his bold leadership’
Hasina thanked the people of India and all the political parties in India for their unequivocal support to the agreement. ‘In this context, I recall with gratitude the historic role of our Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and then Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi.’
The prime minister recognised the contribution of Indian President of India Pranab Mukherjee. ‘We recall with deep gratitude the enormous contribution of India in our glorious War of Liberation.’
She said Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, in a speech delivered in Kolkata on 06 February 1972 had said, ‘As for us, we’ll be wanting to cooperate with all concerned for creating an area of peace in South Asia, where we could live side by side as good neighbors and pursue constructive policies for the benefit of our people….’
‘This visionary statement encapsulates how we look at South Asia. I believe we could collectively achieve greater peace, stability, progress and prosperity for the people in the region which was the dream of our Father of the Nation,’ she added.
The Prime Minister mentioned that India is certainly Bangladesh’s most important neighbour and one of key development partners. ‘India made invaluable contribution during our War of Liberation for which we are deeply grateful.’
To bring balance in trade between the two countries she said both countries agreed to establish Special Economic Zones in Mongla and Bheramara for India.
‘We hope this would increase Indian investment in Bangladesh substantially. Today, we have signed a number of bilateral documents, covering diverse areas of cooperation,’ she said.
These include economic cooperation, trade and investment, security, infrastructure development, education, science and technology, IT and culture.
The Bangladesh prime minister said cooperation in such a vast area shows the depth, breadth and maturity of partnership for development.
‘We also discussed the issues of sharing of water of 54 common rivers. We both reiterated our strong commitment to make our borders peaceful and prosperous. We also pledged ‘zero tolerance’ against terrorism and extremism,’ she added.
The PM said people-to-people contact is the strongest of links. ‘Together, we decided to open Bangladesh Mission in Guwahati, Indian Missions in Khulna and Sylhet. This again reflects our growing mutual confidence and shared commitment to expand our relationship.
We have to translate the Declaration into concrete deliverables. I assure you, Prime Minister, that we are committed to extend full support and cooperation in this journey,’ Hasina said adding that her Indian counterpart’s visit has infused a new dynamism and confidence in relationship between the two countries.

Egyptian court cancels Hamas listing as terrorist organisation

An Egyptian appeals court on Saturday cancelled a ruling to list the Palestinian group Hamas as a terrorist organisation, judicial sources said, signalling a possible easing of pressure on the Gaza Strip’s ruling faction.
Hamas welcomed the decision by Egypt, which faces an islamist insurgency it says is fueled by weapons smuggled from Gaza. Hamas said the ruling would help relations with Cairo.
Hamas is an offshoot of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood which the authorities have declared a terrorist group and have repressed since the army ousted one of its leaders, Mohamed Mursi, from the presidency in 2013.
Cairo has for many years played a central role in engineering ceasefires between neighbouring Israel and Hamas, which dominates Gaza, including a truce reached between the sides in August that ended a 50-day war.
Egyptian officials say weapons are smuggled from Gaza into Egypt where they end up with militant groups fighting to topple Cairo’s Western-backed government.
Islamist militants based in Egypt’s Sinai region, bordering Gaza and Israel, have killed hundreds of police and soldiers since Mursi’s political demise following protests against his rule. The insurgency has spread to other parts of Egypt, the most populous Arab country.
The lawyer who first raised the case against Hamas told Reuters he would request that Egypt’s Foreign Ministry place Hamas on its list of terrorist organisations, based on previous judicial decisions.
‘This ruling does not return us to zero. I have two rulings placing the Brotherhood and the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades on the list of terrorist organisations,’ Ashraf Farahat said.
Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, was classified as a terrorist organisation by Egypt in January.
The Brotherhood was banned in 2013 following Mursi’s ouster as part of a crackdown including many liberal and secular activists.
Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri welcomed Saturday’s decision as ‘correcting a previous mistake’.
‘The decision today represents a commitment by Cairo to its strong role towards the Palestinian cause. There is no doubt that (it) will have positive results and impacts on the relation between Hamas and Cairo,’ he told Reuters.
Hamas had rejected previous judicial rulings, while the Brotherhood maintains it is committed to peaceful activism and rejects links to violence.
Separately, the trial of two Egyptian policemen accused of killing a lawyer in custody began on Saturday.
The case is a rare action against members of the country’s security forces. Rights groups accuse the police of abuses, which the government denies.

Modi, dressed in his iconic ivory Kurta and churidar pajama pairing with ash-colored sleeveless jacket, looked somber as he reached the national memorial in Savar at 11:20am. He placed the wreaths there commemorating the supreme sacrifices of the worthy sons of the soil who embraced martyrdom during the country’s great war of liberation.

After placing wreaths, he stood for some time in solemn silence to pay respect to the martyred freedom fighters. A smartly turned-out contingent of three services presented a guard of honour to the Indian prime minister when the bugles played the last post.

Later, he signed a visitor’s book and planted a sapling on the national memorial premises. On his arrival at the memorial premises, Modi was received, among others, by housing and public works minister Mosharraf Hossain and law minister Anisul Huq .
