Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in Dhaka.
Besides watching historic photos up on the walls of the rooms where Father of the Nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family were assassinated on Aug 15, 1975, he passed some time at the balcony.
Bangabandhu’s grandson Radwan Mujib Siddiq accompanied Modi.
“Saluting an icon of democracy, a towering personality & a great friend of India, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman,” Modi tweeted after the visit.
After reaching the museum at Dhanmondi from the National Memorial at Savar around 12pm, Modi placed a floral wreath on the mural of Bangabandhu.
He then watched the photos of Bagabandhu with Indira Gandhi and many other world leaders, and his family.
At the balcony, he spoke to Siddiq who told him that no one was allowed to enter the building until 1981 after the assassination of his grandfather, someone who overheard the conversation told bdnews24.com.
Siddiq also told Modi that Bangabandhu used to address people from that balcony.
The Indian prime minister suggested to him to make the museum ‘virtual’.
Now Hasina is the prime minister of Bangladesh and leads her father’s Awami League party.
“Bangabandhu founded Bangladesh and his daughter, Sheikh Hasina, saved Bangladesh,” Modi had told Bangladesh Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali at New Delhi in September last year.
He left the museum for Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka Hotel around 12:30pm.
